Sculpture unveiled at site of NIU shootings

DEKALB -- A sculpture has been unveiled in front of Northern Illinois University's Cole Hall, the site of a campus shooting that left five students dead in 2008.

The piece by artist Bruce Niemi is called "Remembered" and was unveiled Thursday at the DeKalb campus. Niemi's design was chosen after a university search and is in addition to a memorial garden outside the building.

Niemi says one of the main things he hoped to accomplish was "to help out the parents."

On Feb. 14, 2008, a former student entered a Cole Hall auditorium and fatally shot five students in a geology class before turning the gun on himself.
